Implementing Random Assignment

Douglas Dobson

A good deal of recent literature has focused on the utility of randomized experimental design principles for the evaluation of social programs. One of the major concerns has been the problem of successfully carrying out the random assignment process under field conditions. The present study addresses this issue m the context of an experimental evaluation of a criminal justice program. The authors discuss the successful design implementation and evaluation of a computer-based random assignment procedure. The utility of the procedure for application in other research settings is also discussed.
